IDEA Committee
Becoming more diverse and inclusive is a tremendous opportunity for architecture as a profession. Everyone should be able to live in a built environment designed by people who appreciate their unique perspectives and needs.
Architects in Schools
The Architects in Schools (AiS) program aims to work with young British Columbians Oregonians to explore the potential and opportunities of design to foster lifelong learners and critical thinkers who actively contribute to their community's dialogue
This program is anticipated to be available to teachers and professions in fall 2026. Sign up for our newsletters to stay in the know about the program launch.
IDEA Survey
In 2023, we distributed a survey to get a pulse on the demographics of the architecture industry in the BC. Collecting this data, in the initial survey and in future surveys, will help drive conversations around meaningful change and advocacy.
We started by engaging with key collaborators to build the content. The survey was then distributed through the summer to both registered and non-registered AIBC members. By sharing the results, we hope to celebrate our strengths, find opportunities in our weaknesses, and use them to plan future advocacy efforts.
The three pillars of our survey were: financial compensation, barriers and opportunities, and overall satisfaction. Comparing answers in these categories to respondents personal identifiers, we can draw some conclusions of where to focus our efforts.

White Paper
The IDEA Committee’s formation in 2021 was born our of the desire to face the anecdotal notion that architecture is and has always been a male-dominated, predominantly white field. The White Paper (an ironically suiting name) was put together by a founding IDEA committee member to begin collecting research on those stats in British Columbia. It led to the circulation of our 2023 IDEA Survey.
The White Paper is a preliminary report and we’ve since completed our desired goal of circulating a survey. Click below to read our first stab at documenting demographics.
