SFU Stadium by Perkins+Will

The new covered stadium provides over 2,000 formal and informal ⁠ seats and a much needed gathering space on campus for athletic ⁠ and cultural events. The most prominent element—an expansive, ⁠ cantilevered canopy—was designed as an elegant, thin plane ⁠ floating above the spectators.⁠

UBC Arts Student Centre by Leckie Studio

The Arts Student Centre at the University of British Columbia is conceived as a compact 11,000 square-foot three-storey building with interconnected floor space across the second and third levels. The ASC provides a new home for the Arts Undergraduate Society and Faculty of Arts students.⁠

Shor House is a personal family retreat where friends and artists can convene to create. At the heart of this project lies an exploration of responses to challenges such as salvage and reuse; sensitivity of construction in a natural setting; and layering in of environmental principles in a non-overt way.⁠

A structural engineers home office and materials testing lab had to fit on a tight site, realizing all allowed area without requiring zoning relaxations. Advanced technologies offer seismic safety, energy performance, sustainability and occupant comfort. The restraint of classic modern form offers visual calm in a busy place.

The Old Crow Community Centre by Kobayashi Zedda Architects

The Vuntut Gwitch’in Community Centre located in Old Crow, Yukon celebrates the traditional lifestyle of the Vuntut Gwitch’in people ⁠ and their generational link to land and water. The facility replaces an existing community hall that has outlived its useful life. The ⁠ community centre is perched along the Porcupine River, its curving form a response to the meandering Porcupine River.⁠

Camera House by Leckie Studio

Camera House acts as a lens for the experience of the site. It is a spatial device to heighten perception, capture ⁠incoming light and guide the inhabitants to live in close connection with their surroundings.⁠

Wii Gyemsiga Siwilaawksat Student Housing by HCMA

Wii Gyemsiga Siwilaawksat is a new student housing building located on the Coast Mountain College campus in Terrace, BC. The college serves 34 communities and seven First Nations in northwestern B.C. The building addressed the need to replace aging facilities with culturally supportive and safe student housing that empowers Indigenous students to flourish in post-secondary education. The project aimed to embrace TRC call to action #63, which states, ‘Build student capacity for intercultural understanding, empathy, and mutual respect.’ The building was named by leaders of the Kitsumkalum community and translates to “Where learners ⁠ are content or comfortable.”⁠

Stanley Park Polar Bear Sauna by TOAD

The Stanley Park Polar Bear Sauna is a self-initiated design proposal for a re-inhabitation of the Stanley Park Zoo Polar Bear Enclosure. Hot pools, cave pools, saunas, sundecks and a cafe re-occupy the site that has been inaccessible for 27 years.⁠

DJA are known for their clarity, construction detailing, and experimentation with architecture’s artful aspects. Anne Pearson is a former architect, the owner of the design shop Vancouver Special and the co-producer of ADFF: Vancouver, the annual architecture and design film festival. Highly active in the Vancouver design community - she often participates as a guest critic and thesis committee member at UBC SALA, and is an ongoing guest critic in the department of Industrial Design at Emily Carr University. Anne is passionate about all facets of design from architecture, interiors, films, and furniture, especially the design traditions of Scandinavia and Japan.

Owner of Senbel Studio

Sharif Senbel was raised by architects; his mother is a regionalist and his father is a modernist. The University of Oregon focused his education on human-based design & environmental architecture. These influences, plus practicing in Eastern, Western & Latin cultures inform his architectural palette.

He established Studio Senbel in 1998. The firm primarily works with community clients not typically served by design professionals. The projects are located in BC, Alberta, Ontario, Illinois and Washington. Sharif is recognized for his pioneering work developing a contemporary mosque typology in Canada. The firm has been recognized with design and community service awards.

Intern Architect at Michael Green Architecture

Rubing Xu is a licensed architect in the Netherlands and currently works at MGA. Before moving to Vancouver, he received his education in Montreal and Toronto, and has worked in offices in Shenzhen, San Diego, Toronto, mostly recently, Amsterdam. Rubing has worked on a wide range of community, recreational and public realm projects in Europe, Asia and North America, and advocates for better urbanism and public infrastructure in Canada. He believes in the power of a diverse and sustainable built environment that can facilitate the increasing density of Canadian cities and make our cities interesting again.

Andrew Latreille’s life has been immersed in Architecture, both in his birth country of Australia and now in Canada where he calls home. His photographic practice is known for his ability to create an immersive understanding the subject. His photographs and short form video have been recognized nationally and internationally both in photographic and architectural competitions and print editorials.

Despite having warm Australian blood, photographing anything in subzero temperatures gets him excited! Andrew sits on the National Board of the Canadian Association of Professional Image creators and is the current president of the Vancouver Chapter. He is proud to be an ambassador for Phase One cameras, working with the worlds largest camera sensor.

Nassim Sani is a registered intern architect AIBC and currently works at Revery Architecture in Vancouver. She completed her Bachelor of Arts degree in Architectural Studies in 2016 and went on to receive her Masters of Architecture degree at University of Toronto in 2020.⁠

⁠ Her work experience ranges from small scale residential and commercial projects to large scale residential and mixed use developments in Toronto and Vancouver. ⁠ Nassim is an active member of AFBC’s Intern committee where she organizes events and other opportunities for future architects to connect and collaborate.⁠
